A Potent Dose of Speed: Impellitteri’s ‘Venom’ (VICP-65294)
Today’s entry spotlights the tenth studio album from the American heavy metal band led by the self-proclaimed “World’s Fastest Guitarist,” Chris Impellitteri. This is “Venom,” released in Japan on March 4, 2015, via the Victor label with the catalog number VICP-65294. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.
Arriving six years after their previous effort “Wicked Maiden,” “Venom” marked a powerful return to form. It reunited Chris Impellitteri with the “Voice of Melodic Metal,” vocalist Rob Rock, rekindling a partnership that many fans consider the band’s definitive lineup. They were joined by longtime bassist James Pulli and new drummer Jon Dette (known for his work with Slayer, Testament, and alongside Chris in Animetal USA), creating a formidable rhythm section.
The album is a relentless assault of speed and melody. Fans and critics noted a return to the catchy, neoclassical phrasing that defined the band’s popularity in the 90s, combined with modern, heavy riffing. The album is concise and high-energy, clocking in at just over 30 minutes with tracks like the blistering title song “Venom,” “Empire Of Lies,” and “Domino Theory” delivering non-stop shredding and anthemic choruses.
A unique feature of this release is the cover artwork, which was designed by Teru, the guitarist of the Japanese visual kei metal bands Jupiter and Versailles. As a fan of Impellitteri, Teru’s involvement highlights the strong connection between the band and their Japanese audience.
VICP-65294 is a high-octane release that captures a veteran band firing on all cylinders. It delivers exactly what fans crave: lightning-fast guitar solos, soaring vocals, and pure heavy metal energy.
