Unleashing the Ultimate Sound: DragonForce’s ‘Extreme Power Metal’ (GQCS-90760)
Today’s entry spotlights the eighth studio album from the multinational speed metal masters, DragonForce. Titled “Extreme Power Metal,” this CD was released in Japan on September 25, 2019, via Ward Records with the catalog number GQCS-90760. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.
As the title suggests, this album is a direct and confident declaration of the band’s style. It is bursting with high-speed melodic numbers, epic ballads, and the signature over-the-top guitar duels between Herman Li and Sam Totman. The album embraces a “future retro” aesthetic, celebrating the 80s influences of video games and movies that define the DragonForce world.
This recording marked a new chapter for the band as the first album following the departure of their long-time keyboardist. Stepping in as a guest was Coen Janssen of the symphonic metal band Epica. His performance added a fresh, symphonic layer to the band’s sound, perfectly complementing Marc Hudson’s soaring vocals and the rhythm section of Frédéric Leclercq and Gee Anzalone.
The tracklist features blazing anthems like “Highway To Oblivion” and the catchy “Heart Demolition,” alongside a high-speed power metal cover of Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” that became a talking point among fans.
For collectors, this Japanese edition (GQCS-90760) is the definitive version to own. It includes the exclusive bonus track “Behind The Mirror Of Death,” a high-quality song that was not available on standard international editions. This release captures DragonForce doing what they do best: delivering a fun, technically impressive, and relentlessly energetic metal experience.
