Southern Rock Majesty: Black Stone Cherry’s ‘Magic Mountain’ (WPCR-15581)

Today’s entry spotlights the fourth studio album from the Kentucky rockers who reinvigorated the southern rock sound for a new generation: Black Stone Cherry. We are looking at the 2014 Japanese pressing of “Magic Mountain,” released on Roadrunner Records (Warner Music Japan) with the catalog number WPCR-15581. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.

Released on April 30, 2014, this album marked a return to a heavier, more organic sound after the polished approach of their previous release, “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.” Produced by Joe Barresi (known for his work with Queens of the Stone Age and Tool), “Magic Mountain” captures the band’s raw energy and live power, blending the soulful grit of southern rock with the heavy riffing of modern metal and the swagger of classic hard rock.

The album kicks off with the driving “Holding On… To Letting Go” and features a powerful mix of heavy hitters like “Me And Mary Jane” and “Fiesta Del Fuego,” alongside the heartfelt ballad “Sometimes” and the country-tinged “Hollywood In Kentucky.” Chris Robertson’s vocals are soulful and commanding, perfectly complemented by Ben Wells’ fuzzy, energetic guitar work and the rock-solid rhythm section of Jon Lawhon and John Fred Young.

For collectors, this Japanese edition is the definitive version. It includes two exclusive bonus tracks: “Leave Your World Behind” and “Revolutionize,” adding even more value to an already packed album. WPCR-15581 is a fantastic document of a band hitting their stride, delivering a “real deal” rock album that respects its roots while forging its own heavy path.
