A Lost Gem Unearthed: Grant Green’s Powerful “Nigeria” Session
The vaults of Blue Note Records are filled with legendary sessions, some released immediately, others waiting decades to see the light of day. Grant Green’s “Nigeria” belongs to the latter category, a powerhouse quartet date recorded in 1962 but not officially released until 1980 as part of the label’s LT series. We are looking at a Japanese CD reissue of this brilliant session, likely corresponding to the catalog number TOCJ-50284.
This album captures Grant Green in absolutely peak form, showcasing his incredibly pure, blues-drenched, and instantly recognizable guitar style. Leading a top-tier quartet, Green is joined by an absolute dream team rhythm section: the legendary Sonny Clark on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and the explosive Art Blakey on drums. The energy and chemistry between these four masters are palpable throughout the recording.
Unlike some of Green’s later, funkier output, “Nigeria” is firmly rooted in the hard bop tradition, albeit with modal touches hinting at the directions jazz was heading. The music is intense, swinging, and deeply soulful. The tracklist features a mix of originals and standards, providing ample space for Green’s brilliant single-note lines and the inventive solos of Sonny Clark. Art Blakey’s drumming, as always, is a force of nature, driving the band with incredible power and precision.
The title track, “Nigeria,” is a particularly compelling piece, showcasing the modal influence and the band’s ability to build intensity over an extended form. This session is a testament to Grant Green’s mastery and the incredible depth of talent present at Blue Note during this golden era.
This Japanese CD reissue is a fantastic way to experience this belatedly released classic, offering excellent sound quality. For any fan of Grant Green, Sonny Clark, Art Blakey, or prime Blue Note hard bop, “Nigeria” is an absolutely essential and powerful recording. You can find this album on our website.
