A Lesson in Nu-Metal: The Union Underground’s ‘…An Education In Rebellion’ (SRCS 2286)
Let’s dive into the turn of the millennium nu-metal boom with the debut album from The Union Underground, titled “…An Education In Rebellion.” This entry focuses on the Japanese CD release, issued by SME Records on July 12, 2000, with the catalog number SRCS 2286. This particular copy comes complete with its original obi strip.
Hailing from San Antonio, Texas, The Union Underground carved out a niche in the heavy music scene with a sound that blended the rhythmic bounce of nu-metal with industrial edges and a hard rock attitude. This album features their biggest hits, including the wrestling theme favorite “Turn Me On ‘Mr. Deadman’” and the driving “South Texas Deathride.”
The band was led by vocalist/guitarist Bryan Scott and guitarist Patrick Kennison. Notably, the lineup also featured bassist John Moyer, who would later go on to achieve massive success as the bassist for Disturbed. The album boasts high-level production values, with tracks produced by Don Gilmore and the band, and mixed by the acclaimed Brendan O’Brien.
As a Japanese release, SRCS 2286 offers the usual perks for collectors. Beyond the standard booklet, it includes an additional 8-page Japanese booklet containing liner notes by the renowned rock critic Masa Itoh, providing context for the Japanese audience. For fans of the late 90s/early 2000s alternative metal wave, “…An Education In Rebellion” remains a solid listen, and this Japanese pressing is a high-quality way to own it.
