A Heavy Metal Time Capsule: Overdrive’s Self-Titled Picture Disc (SKULL 9806p)
Today’s entry highlights a special archival release from the Swedish heavy metal band Overdrive. We are looking at their self-titled 7-inch single, released in 2000 by Stormbringer Productions with the catalog number SKULL 9806p.
This release is a true collector’s item, presented as a heavyweight picture disc limited to just 500 hand-numbered copies. Despite being released in 2000, the audio content digs deep into the band’s history, featuring tracks recorded as their very first demo back in December 1980 at Studio Blekinge.
The single features two tracks:
A: Overdrive
B: 20th Century
These recordings capture the raw, early energy of the band, featuring a lineup that includes guitarist Janne Stark—a notable figure in the European metal scene—alongside vocalist Pelle Thuresson. It offers a glimpse into the NWOBHM-influenced sound that was brewing in Sweden at the start of the 80s.
SKULL 9806p is a meticulously packaged release. The picture disc comes housed in a wrap-around sleeve that opens up to reveal a full band biography, discography, and a photo montage, making it an essential historical document for fans of Swedish heavy metal.
