A fascinating collision of hard rock and sci-fi culture is the focus for this entry. We are looking at the 1980 7-inch single “Soldier In Space” (X-Bomber), performed by the Japanese hard rock band Bow Wow. Released on SMS Records with the catalog number SM06-76, this 45 RPM vinyl is a unique item in their discography.

This single served as the official theme song release for the 1980-1981 Fuji TV series “X-Bomber,” a “Super Mariorama” (marionette) show created by Go Nagai, which became known internationally as “Star Fleet.”

The single features two tracks:
A: Soldier In Space (Opening Theme)
B: Ginga Hyouryuu (Closing Theme)

The A-side, composed by guitarist Kyoji Yamamoto, brings Bow Wow’s signature powerful sound to the world of tokusatsu, creating a memorable and driving anthem for the show. The B-side features the series’ ending theme.

SM06-76 is a highly collectible crossover item. It captures Bow Wow applying their musical prowess to a children’s sci-fi series, creating a lasting piece of pop culture history that resonates with fans of both the band and vintage Japanese TV.
