Let’s focus on arguably the most important 7-inch single in Japanese heavy metal history: “Crazy Night” by Loudness. Released on December 1, 1984, via the Columbia label (Nippon Columbia) with the catalog number AH-528, this 45 RPM vinyl was the vanguard for their massive international breakthrough.
This single, which would be featured on their legendary 1985 album “Thunder in the East,” was written by Minoru Niihara and Akira Takasaki and produced by Max Norman. Recorded in Los Angeles in late 1984, it was this song that became their signature anthem and gave them their big break in the American metal scene.
The single features two tracks:
A: Crazy Night
B: No Way Out
“Crazy Night” is famous for its iconic “M-Z-A!” chant, which, according to legend, was a meaningless placeholder that producer Max Norman asked Niihara to sing over the riff, but it sounded so good they decided to keep it in.
The original 7-inch release was also notable for its packaging. The cover sheet was a removable color sticker, and the release also came with a separate Loudness autographs sticker, making it a fantastic collector’s item from a pivotal moment in J-Metal history.
