Let’s explore a significant album in the career of the energetic Japanese rock ‘n’ roll band Kodomo Band. This entry focuses on their 1983 release, “Heart Break Kids,” issued on the major Epic/Sony label with the catalog number 28•3H-85. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.
Issued on May 5, 1983, this 10-track, 12-inch vinyl LP marked the band’s first release for the Epic label, a major step up from their previous indie home. Underscoring this new ambition, the album was recorded in New York at Right Track Recording and, most notably, produced by American rock legend Rick Derringer. This collaboration aimed to capture their raw rock ‘n’ roll spirit with a powerful, international-standard production.
The album also marked a lineup change, introducing a new bassist. “Heart Break Kids” delivers a strong collection of straightforward rock ‘n’ roll anthems, blending their signature frantic energy with a slightly more polished hard rock sound. Tracks like “Juke Box Rock ‘N’ Roller,” “She Is ‘No. 1’,” and “Dirty Hero” perfectly showcase this potent combination, delivering pure rock spirit.
28•3H-85 stands as a key album in Kodomo Band’s discography, documenting their major label debut and their collaboration with a renowned international producer. It’s an excellent snapshot of their powerful rock ‘n’ roll sound refined for a larger stage.
