Venezuelan Metal Legend: Gillman’s ‘El Guerrero’ (SR 056)

Today’s entry takes us to South America to explore a landmark release in the history of Venezuelan heavy metal. We are looking at the 1985 album El Guerrero by Gillman, released on the Sono-Rodven label with the catalog number SR 056.

After leaving the legendary band Arkangel, vocalist Paul Gillman formed his own eponymous band, further cementing his status as the voice of heavy metal in Venezuela. This album, his second solo effort (though often considered the first full band effort under the Gillman name), is a cult classic of Latin American metal, characterized by traditional heavy riffs and Gillman’s high-pitched, operatic vocal style sung entirely in Spanish.

The music is pure, unadulterated 80s heavy metal. The title track, El Guerrero, is a galloping anthem that defines the band’s lyrical themes of fighting for metal. Other standouts include the defiant Impostores and the absolute anthem Guardianes Del Metal (Guardians of Metal), which remains a staple of the genre in the region. The dual guitar attack of Ernesto “Feedback” Ferro and Rodrigo Yoma Aparici provides a rich, melodic backdrop to the driving rhythm section.

For collectors outside of South America, SR 056 is a difficult prize to hunt down. Venezuelan vinyl from the 80s is becoming increasingly rare, especially in good condition. This release on Sono-Rodven captures a specific moment in time when the South American metal scene was exploding with creativity and passion, making it a vital piece of history for global metal archivists.
