California Dreaming: Night Ranger’s ‘Somewhere In California’ (KICP-1560)
Today’s entry spotlights a triumphant return to form for the American arena rock legends, Night Ranger. We are looking at their 2011 studio album, “Somewhere In California,” released in Japan on the Nexus label (King Records) with the catalog number KICP-1560. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.
Released on June 8, 2011, this album marked a new chapter for the band. It was their first studio effort following the departure of original guitarist Jeff Watson. However, the core trio of Jack Blades (bass/vocals), Kelly Keagy (drums/vocals), and Brad Gillis (guitar) proved their chemistry was as potent as ever, seamlessly integrating new guitarist Joel Hoekstra and keyboardist Eric Levy into the fold.
“Somewhere In California” is widely hailed by fans and critics as the band’s finest work of their reunion era, and arguably their best since their 80s heyday. It captures the essence of that golden era—refreshing, upbeat, and driving hard rock with massive choruses. The album opens with the high-energy anthem “Growin’ Up In California,” which instantly recalls the spirit of “(You Can Still) Rock in America.”
The songwriting, led by Jack Blades, is consistently strong, with fans noting a “no filler” experience. Highlights include the soulful rocker “Lay It On Me” and the stirring ballad “Time Of Our Lives,” which features the band’s signature vocal harmonies.
As is customary with King Records releases, this Japanese edition offers exclusive value. It includes a twelfth track, “L.A. No Name,” a beautiful acoustic instrumental that closes the album on a distinct note. KICP-1560 is an essential release for melodic rock fans, proving that these veterans still possess a vibrant rock spirit.
